After a decade without any reported cases of bird flu in Cambodia, nearly 30 cases have been reported in a short period of time, seven of which occurred in June 2025.
The Cambodian Ministry of Health’s rapid response teams have been deployed to conduct further investigations and respond to situation and is part of a pan-government containment exercise.
Between 1 January and 1 July 2025, Cambodia notified the World Health Organisation (WHO) of 11 laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A virus (H5N1), including six deaths. Among the 11 cases, three were in children under five years old.
Based on the information currently available, additional cases among individuals exposed to sick or dead poultry are expected in Cambodia. The occurrence of human-to-human transmission is considered unlikely. Containment efforts are based on high-quality biosecurity measures including the eradication of the causative virus from poultry environments.
