World Environment Day this year falls on 5th June, with a focus on ending plastic pollution. World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme, has been held since 1973 and is now the biggest international day for the environment.
Plastic pollution is seen pervading every habitat of the natural world. Even our bodies can be polluted by microplastics because of the products we use and consume. World Environment Day emphasises the need for ending plastic pollution as an important contribution to achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Manufacturing industries depend on the use of plastics. As a manufacturer of chemical products, Mirius recognises that plastic packaging is crucial to maintaining our long-established service to customers.
As a responsible manufacturer of products packaged in plastic materials, Mirius, considers how sustainable approaches to its business can contribute to reducing plastic pollution. As such, we routinely use plastic packaging with a minimum 30% recycled content. Most of our higher volume products use packaging made from 100% recycled content. In addition, we have replaced routine use of plastic-based packaging tape with a paper alternative and calculated the weight saving on plastic use to be 2000 kg per month.
Whilst this progress is encouraging, we still regard this as work in progress and sustainability goals will only be met with concerted, industry-wide effort.
