As with any infectious disease – prevention is better than cure. How is mpox prevented? This article briefly considers inhibiting the virus from establishing an infection in the body and biosecurity – breaking the transmission of the virus between susceptible hosts.

There is a vaccine. Yes, there are in fact several newer and safer vaccines approved by the United Nations. Although the history of vaccination against poxvirus has been a tremendous success when we remember Smallpox has been eradicated, mpox vaccination programmes are not exactly straightforward meaning that only selected individuals should be considered for vaccination. Mass vaccination, for example during the COVID-19 epidemic, is not recommended for mpox.

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces or objects alongside good personally hygiene will always remain key preventative measures with most infectious disease, including mpox. Hand washing, so prominent during COVID-19, after touching surfaces or objects that may be contaminated can help prevent transmission. Mpox virus is recognised to remain infectious on inanimate surfaces although for how long remains unclear. Application of suitable disinfectants to contaminated areas, therefore, has a key role to play in reduction of disease transmission.

How do disinfectants work against mpox? A suitably formulated and tested disinfectant will offer a high degree of antiviral efficacy against a wide range of viruses including the virus that causes mpox and other poxviruses. Studies have revealed that disinfectants containing the active biocide substance, Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC) damage the important protein material of a virus particle and in so doing QAC disinfectants can prevent the treated virus from being able to infect more human cells. Loss of infectivity results in reduced viral transmission and fewer cases of mpox.

We can help. Our range of antiviral QAC-based disinfectants has been extensively tested against key viruses and microorganisms to allow the consumer and end user access to highly efficacious biosecurity measures.
