Two cases of the highly contagious virus infection, African Swine Fever (ASF), have been reported in wild boar in Spain. This is a concerning development for the European Union as Spain, the EU’s biggest pork producer and exporter, has been free of ASF for over 30 years.
With an aim to protect domestic herds and prevent further spread of ASF, the UK government has taken decisive action by banning imports of pork products from Spain, which previously accounted for around 37,000 tons annually.
In the absence of an assured vaccine against the ASF virus, culling of infected pigs is a standard measure to combat the spread of this economically important disease. In addition to culling, containment of ASF relies on robust biosecurity measures, including thorough disinfection strategies using products proven to be effective against the ASF virus.
Mirius offers a range of cleaning and disinfection products designed to combat infectious diseases such as ASF. Omnicide for example, is proven effective against a wide range of animal pathogens after extensive testing at reference laboratories in the UK, China and the Netherlands.
