Recycling

Recycling

Recycling is a vital step in becoming more eco-friendly because it reduces the amount of waste going straight to landfill. Recycling is best employed alongside other sustainable practices to further reduce a business’s environmental impact.

Our recycling

In 2019 Mirius launched its 100% recycled and recyclable 750ml trigger bottles. This was a first for the industry, being the UK’s only cleaning products manufacturer to use 100% recycled plastic at the time. The new bottles also used 10% less plastic than its predecessor whilst still retaining the same rigidity and strength. Alongside this launch we were also able to start providing 750ml angle neck bottles and 5 litre jerry cans made up of 25% recycled material, all of which being 100% recyclable after use, another first for the industry.

The trigger bottles were launched at the London Cleaning Show in the same year and went on to win their ‘Cleaning Products Innovation’ and ‘Best of the Best’ award.

Currently over 80% of our bottle packaging can be 100% recycled, all our wastepaper, plastic and cardboard throughout the business is segregated into dedicated bins and then into skips which are collected by specialist recycle companies. As part of our Super Sapling Pledge, we commit to utilizing at least 70% recyclable cartons in our supply chain. We also encourage customers to return pallets for re-use.

With the goal of reducing single-use plastic and promoting recycling, in early 2024 Mirius replaced its plastic packing tape with paper tape. This switch reduced our plastic waste by over 2,000kg per month with a more sustainable, recyclable alternative. This helps us and our customers in our joint sustainability efforts.

However, we recognise that these progressive decisions are just a first step and that recycling alone is not the completion of our sustainability standards. We are researching more sustainable alternatives to plastic bottles such as card and paper containers, as well as closed-loop systems to further reduce waste and carbon emissions.
